What a virtual boundary is
A virtual boundary tells the mower where it may and may not work without requiring a physical wire along every edge. The boundary exists in the digital map and is enforced by the mower’s localization system.
How boundaries are created
Setup varies by manufacturer. You may drive the mower around the lawn with the app, walk the boundary with a device, define points on an existing map or let the mower create an initial map that you then edit.
Why virtual boundaries are useful
They are easier to change than buried wire, make it practical to create temporary exclusion zones and can simplify complicated multi-zone properties. They also allow features such as route corridors and custom mowing areas.
Accuracy depends on navigation
A virtual line is only as reliable as the mower’s ability to know where it is. RTK signal quality, LiDAR localization, camera perception and sensor fusion can therefore affect how tightly the mower follows an edge.
Buyer takeaway
Do not only ask whether a mower is “wire-free.” Check how easy the map is to edit, whether boundaries can be offset precisely, how no-go zones work, and whether narrow passages or separate lawns can be connected in the app.
