How to read an IP code
IP stands for Ingress Protection. The first character describes protection against solid objects and dust; the second describes water protection. If a position uses X, that part of the protection was not specified in the published rating.
Examples in robot mowers
Robot mowers commonly publish water-related ratings because they operate outdoors and need regular cleaning. A higher number can indicate stronger tested water protection, but it does not automatically mean every cleaning method is allowed.
What IP does not tell you
The rating does not describe impact resistance, corrosion, UV ageing, long-term seal wear, battery durability or software reliability. It is one standardized test result, not a complete quality grade.
Cleaning still follows the manual
Even an IP-rated mower may prohibit pressure washing or submersion. The charging station can also have a different rating from the mower itself. Always follow the model-specific cleaning instructions.
Buyer takeaway
Use IP ratings to compare documented environmental protection, but do not translate them into claims the manufacturer has not made.
